Shoichi Aoki, publisher and photographer, started documenting the fashion revolution in Harajuku during the mid-1990s, where he noticed that teenagers were employing a mix-and-match ethos when getting dressed, combining aspects from traditional Japanese clothing— like kimonos and geta sandals— with secondhand finds, designer pieces as well as handmade accessories. With FRUiTS came a new niche that immortalises the bold and colorful truth of teenage reality.
Fresh FRUiTS (2005) is the latest sequel to the original Fruits chronicles that originally debuted in 1997.
For those intrigued by microcultures and ever-evolving teenage daydreams.
