Published in 1993, Abyss is the first photo collection by acclaimed Japanese photographer Hiroshi Nonami (b. 1954). Known for his intricate darkroom techniques, Nonami creates a fantasy world in which human forms transform into mythical creatures, with figures that seem to sprout wings, fins, and other organic elements. Entirely handcrafted without the use of digital tools, his images embody a gothic, dreamlike aesthetic that blurs the line between humanity and nature. It is rumored that he even uses lenses intentionally cultivated with mold.
Abyss explores themes of beauty and otherworldliness, guiding viewers through a bizarre yet ethereal journey into the surreal and the sublime. Perfect for those who love dream and zone off.
