In 2004, invited by the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jean Paul Gaultier avoided both a retrospective and a simple presentation of clothing to create a fantasy born from the meeting of two forms of craftsmanship: haute couture and baking. It all started with a dream of a couturier with no materials to create except flour, water, salt, and yeast—Pain Couture rose to life.
The exhibition catalog reveals the behind-the-scenes of the project and delves into the workshops of both bakers and couturiers: the gestures, tools, sensitivity of materials, and know-how of both crafts are compared to create a sensory universe where two worlds meet.
For the image-hungry and the curiosity-driven.
